Mr Darcy Second Chance Gillian Smith 9781521173619 Books

This story is so unique that it really should be a 5 star, but the editing drags it down. I dont believe that the author's first language is English. Again, an editor (and freelance editors are very affordable) could make this story shine.
I am a stickler for grammar and correct word usage. My red pen was itching to mark up my Kindle. Still, I kept reading because the story was that good.
It reads like a gothic novel. It's dark and angst-filled.
There are confusing spots because there are words missing from a sentence and you have to infer what was supposed to be written.
I would really love to re-read this if it ever gets the edit it deserves.

Mr Darcy Second Chance Gillian Smith 9781521173619 Books Reviews

I have to agree with several other reviewers
1. This is a P&P story only in character names and a few background details.
2. This story desperately needed a proofreader. It seems likely that English is not the author’s native language.
Most (but not nearly all) of the errors are the “little words” and awkward sentence structure.

If the characters were named Fred and Ethel (for example) and a competent
English-speaker had edited the text, this could be a five-star.

Darcy married Anne when they were both VERY young.
Elizabeth is also married and has been abandoned in Scotland.
So, if you are one of the readers who don’t like D/E married to anyone else, this is not a story for you.

Elizabeth “Do you ever wonder if there is something more?”
The intimate scenes are also VERY intimate and eventually rather frequent.

What has happened to Edward, Darcy and Anne’s son?
Who is the maid who seems more of a family member?
Why can’t Georgiana abide living at Pemberley?
Why doesn’t Elizabeth contact her family in Hertfordshire?
These are the questions that make this a good story – but don’t expect it to be JAFF.
The story is told from Darcy's point of view but in the third person. We are privy to his thoughts and, my goodness, he is a tortured character in this tale. He has run away to Scotland to avoid the sadness of his life in England and while there he meets Elizabeth. Elizabeth has her own demons she is dealing with, but the reader does not learn of them until she confesses all to Darcy (which happens long after they are married). In this story, Darcy is as poor at interpreting any woman's moods or feelings as he is in canon. And since the story only reveals his thoughts, we are left wondering what is driving Elizabeth's actions. The story has a dark atmosphere with a definite gothic feeling to it.

This could have been a solid 5-star book with better editing. I suspect that English is not the author's native language since there are numerous sentences containing odd placements of nouns, verbs, and qualifiers. It really is a shame that a better editor/translator was not employed since the errors detract from the overall story. I hope that this author will continue writing as this book shows she has real talent. And I hope she will find some good beta readers to help her with English sentence structure in the future. (Author, if you are reading this, several fan fiction sites offer access to betas.)
This story is so different from most P&P variations I have read. Elizabeth and Darcy are both broken individuals in many ways. The pain they feel is palpable. The story is intriguing. I was sucked in to the story after reading the first page. There are lots of grammar mistakes which frequently detracts from the story.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but it definitely needs work.
I read the other reviews first and decided to buy this one anyways so I was prepared for the editing issues. A few people mentioned that it appeared English was a second language for the author. There were times that is seemed more like the author was using Dragon and had not gone back to catch the word errors. I agree that an editor is desperately needed for this book.
That said, the story line for this book is deeply emotional and at times disturbing. It has nothing more to do with Pride and Prejudice than using the names of the characters and would be a better book if the author just created her own names for the characters. The language was way too modern for Regency, but could have still been from an earlier time period. Also, the setting could have been anywhere. Once I stopped thinking of the characters from P&P and just went with the story, it was fine. There was some repetition that could have been dropped, and some areas that were very unclear due to the language. I wish the author had delved into the backgrounds of the characters a bit more--not at the beginning but as the story went on. There were several things that the reader had to guess at. Also passing of time was a bit vague.
To sum it up, I believe the author has a great first draft and, with the help of an editor, could release a wonderful, non-P&P, historical romance.
This novel contains countless spelling errors, words missing etc... But frankly, I don't care...

This author is a fantastic storyteller!
It's a dark, passionate and thrilling read .

Darcy is in Scotland, running from reality when he spots a pregnant woman being accosted by two peasants. He helps her selling her goods and follow her home only to find the estate abandon, by both the servants and the husband. After the baby is born and they discover her husband is dead, they wed and leave for Darbyshire.
Mr Darcy on the other hand has lots of skeletons in his closets but so does Elizabeth.
Jalousy, death and despair follow the couple on their road to HEA.

Heart - wrenching story that will make your heart pound and your hands tremble.
Unputdownable!

This would have been 5 stars from me if not for the lack of editing.

If you are prickly on the editing I would not recommend it. I am not even English and found a lot of them... To everybody else, it's a page turner you would not regret reading.
