Wolf Saphire thinks he has a cure for the walking dead. The walking dead who are trying to stop the uparmored HUmvee. A vehicle the walkers can't get into. A vehicle that runs them down with no damage. Avehicle McDaniel and his team are using to get to Central Park in downtown NY City where they will be ferried to Ft. Detrick, Maryland.

McDaniel's second in command is First Sergeant David Gartrell. A Gartrell McDaniel's served with in Afghanistan. Gartrell dislikes McDaniel and doesn't think he's good enough for this mission. A Gargrell who's mission oriented. The mission comes first. He doesn't care who he sacrifices for the mission. Gartrell and McDaniel's will disagree many times on this mission.

They do make it and get the team and Saphires loaded. Half on one Blackhawk and the other half on the second Blackhawk. Operational Detachment Alpha OMEN is headed by CW3 Keith and his team load into the second Blackhawk.

The choppers take off but the second is boarded by the walking dead and goes down with the crew and OMEN.

McDaniels chopper heads out but a walker falls out of a building onto the rotors and the chopper crash's. McDaniel and his team get the Saphire's into a building. The building has glass front door. Its thick glass and the walkers can't get through it.

The building has one Walker up on the twenty seventh floor. A Walker that is killed. They also find Earl, a maintenance man and his two daughters. Earl will be a big help to McDaniel's and his team.

The building still has power and a kitchen area loaded with food and water. Only problem is the walkers have surrounded the building and there is no way out.

So begins one damned fine read.

The Gathering Dead A Zombie Apocalypse Novel eBook Stephen Knight Reviews

I love the zombie apocalypse concept. I mean I REALLY love it. I have watched pretty much every zombie-related movie (including obscure ones and ones that totally suck but I had to watch anyway) because it's like an addiction. However, one thing I am very picky about is zombie novels. I've read some great zombie novels (e.g. Rise Again by Ben Tripp, Day by Day Armageddon by J. L. Bourne and the ever-famous World War Z by Max Brooks just to name a few) but I've also read some incredibly horrible ones, too (I won't name any names in this regard but there are quite possibly more of the latter out there than there are the former). The Gathering Dead by Stephen Knight is definitely one of the good ones. It's not a literary masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination however. Instead, it is a balls-out, no-guts-no-glory, kill-'em-kill-'em-all adrenaline rush that is not to be missed by anyone who appreciates a good action story involving zombies.

Tired of reading slow-progressing zombie novels with too much angst and philosophical mumbo-jumbo (usually from writers who are clearly paid on a per-word basis)? Read this book instead. Tired of authors who lack even a rudimentary understanding of military operations, equipment and weaponry? Read this book instead. One of Stephen Knight's strengths is moving the story along in a fast-paced, action-appealing style with an extensive knowledge of the military (particularly Special Operations). From the minute I read page one, I was hooked. As I neared the end of the novel, my emotions were mixed with rapt attention and curiosity (as to how it would end and which characters would prevail...if anyone at all) as well as mild irritation (because I knew it was coming to a conclusion and did not want this captivating tale to end). Thankfully, Knight has written several more books in this series (after this one, there is in order Left With The Dead, The Rising Horde Vol 1 and The Rising Horde Vol 2).

Some (dare I say most?) women may not appreciate Knight's testosterone-fueled style as much as men but it's still a definite welcome change from other "more intellectual" zombie novels (of which those also make for a nice read every now and then, too). The Gathering Dead is guilty pleasure pure and simple. It's a great zombie action movie like 28 Days (and 28 Weeks) Later in book format rather than DVD (which is not as easy to write as one might think). Knight does it right. In fact, he does it damn well better than anything else I've ever read. I love this guy's writing so much that I actually ordered a bunch more of his books all at once (something I rarely do). I love his mix of witty character dialogue and action so much that I even ordered his non-zombie related vampire novel City Of The Damned just to see if that will also rock (and I usually hate vampire stuff).

Like I said, this is a guilty pleasure that hits the spot. So if you're a guy (or girl) who loves a rock-'em-sock-'em zombie action novel, do yourself a favor and check this book out. I SERIOUSLY doubt you'll be disappointed!
Would give 3 1\2 stars if I could
Starts off a little slow and the non stop military jargon got annoying but thankfully that wasn't as bad after a few chapters. I enjoyed this book and the characters enough to continue with the series. The main reason this book caught my eye was that some of the zombies could retain some "muscle" memory. Scary enough that some remember how to open doors but having military zombies remember their training is terrifying. I probably would have given this 4 stars if the editing had been better.
I am not even finished with this book and I am very disappointed. Well rather annoyed, and frustrated. It was NOT properly proof read before production!! I have dyslexia so I am not too hard when there are mistakes in books, but this book has too many. The author also frustratingly feels the need to constantly mention the names of the guns/equipment the soldiers are using. Its rather annoying to read AA-11 or whatever over, and over again. Instead of simply his gun. As well as all the acronyms. When they are 7 deep do you need to use them every other page?! The book is also very slow paced. Also the Dr. in the book simply makes NO sense attitude wise. He has a very unhelpful attitude, and it makes you wonder why they are bothering with him to begin with. This book is not an easy read with how it is worded, and the sentence's starting and stopping, and the editing. I will finish it simply because I paid for it. But I don't hold any hopes it will get any better. ***Update since finishing....I will say this much for the book, the zombie's actions are very interesting. That part does keep you wanting to finish it. I will admit I order the next two books, hopefully like other authors it will get better. At least I hope so.***
